REGENERATIVE INJECTION THERAPIES

by Dr. Michael Nowazek

Regenerative injection therapies are natural treatments used for areas of difficult healing or areas of pain that may not respond to oral treatments or that may not have improved over time. It can happen that someone who has had an injury, such as a back injury, finds that the pain lingers and becomes a chronic problem. The injury just doesn’t seem to heal. We find the source of the problem and work to improve healing in the injured area. We have worked with patients who have had trouble with large joints including knee, hip, shoulder, and back issues. We’ve worked with patients who are on the waiting list for joint replacement surgery or patients who are not candidates for surgery due to health or age limitations. Injection therapy bypasses the digestive system to promote a healing response by delivering vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients directly into the area. Regenerative injections are custom blended to provide the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients specific for each patient to achieve optimized outcomes based on the diagnosis made by a doctor at Green Apple Health Care. Types of Regenerative Injection Therapies There are three types of regenerative injection therapies: Prolotherapy Prolotherapy with ozone (Prolozone) Platelet Rich Plasma therapy (PRP) A number of factors are taken into consideration when determining which of these therapies is most appropriate to administer, including the severity of the pain or the injury and patient preference as to how aggressively they want it treated. Prolotherapy/Prolozone Prolotherapy is the most basic of joint and tendon therapies. It is the injection of a local anesthetic and various B vitamins. Prolozone is a similar injection to prolotherapy but with ozone mixed in. Each treatment normally takes about 30 minutes and is usually done once a week for the first four weeks. Then, depending on the severity of the condition and the patient’s healing response, the treatment schedule can be tapered off. Progress is regularly evaluated and the treatment adjusted accordingly. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy *Important note – The following information regarding PRP therapy is provided strictly for informational purposes. PRP therapy is not legally available in naturopathic clinics in Alberta. Therefore, effective January 2025 and until further notice, PRP therapy is not being performed at Green Apple Health Care. If it is determined by one of our doctors that PRP therapy is appropriate for a patient, that patient will be referred to a physician or other practitioner whose regulatory agencies have authorized them to perform PRP therapy. PRP can be used for patients with moderate to severe injury or pain. In this therapy the patient’s own blood is extracted and then put into a special centrifuge that spins to extract the Platelet Rich Plasma portion of their blood. That portion is then injected into the area of injury. The Platelet Rich Portion of the patient’s blood has the growth factors and regenerative cells to stimulate a healing response. This is a fairly involved procedure and takes about an hour to perform. Which area(s) of the body to be treated will be discussed with the doctor during consultation prior to treatment being initiated. Patient progress is evaluated in a follow-up consultation. _________________________________________________ Disclaimer This article is informational in nature and is not intended to diagnose, constitute medical assessment, recommendations, treatment, or advice.
