Treating Back Pain Part 2

Back Pain:

Natural Treatments using Traditional Chinese Medicine
Part 2 – Tui na

Back pain is a common issue. It can come on from injury, degeneration and simple daily usage.  There are 3 different treatments that are used  in TCM: acupuncture, Tui Na (Chinese medical massage) and cupping.  In this part we will discuss Tui na.

Tui na is Chinese medical massage that is often used for treating back pain and injury.  It is specifically used to treat a medical disease or for rehabilitation, it is not used for relaxation. It is used for everything from musculoskeletal injuries to internal medicine health problems. Just like a prescription for acupuncture is created to treat back pain, a prescription would be created for tui na that best suits the patient’s injury and type of pain.

Tui na is most commonly known in the West as acupressure. It may involve pressing on the acupuncture point with a finger or thumb or various other hand techniques in order to stimulate the body to heal. It is often combined with herbal liniments to increase the effectiveness. Historical records show that Tui na had it’s place in China as far back as 2700 B.C. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that tui na started to spread outside of China.

Self tui na can also be taught to a patient so they may practise at home in between treatments. This allows patients to learn to treat their own problems and take control over their illness.
