The Connection Between Gut Inflammation and Weight Loss: The Importance of Food Sensitivities

Have you tried everything to lose weight? You’ve lost weight before but now you’re back where you started and you just feel stuck? Heaps of exercise and restricting your diet isn’t working for you anymore?

There are commonly overlooked considerations for achieving weight loss goals. A lot of blanket approaches to weight loss estimate your base nutritional intake based on your weight, height and activity level. At Green Apple Health Care, we can physically measure your base nutritional needs using a Bio Impedance Analysis device, providing truly individualized advice, no guess work required.

Hormonal issues including estrogen, progesterone and testosterone as well as thyroid and metabolism control can impair your ability to shed fat. Inflammation in your digestive tract can impact your ability to absorb vital nutrients and minerals needed for weight loss. Stress and it’s associated hormone, cortisol, can make your body hold on to fat. Sleepless nights lead to fatigue during the day, but they can also impair hormone release that can help with fat loss. Your liver is the master of cleansing your body of toxins and if it’s not functioning properly, your body can hang on to excess fat. Fat loss plateaus can happen, but we can help you bust through them by addressing these commonly overlooked areas of health.

How Digestive Tract Inflammation Affects Weight Loss

Inflammation in the digestive tract can come from history of infection, frequent antibiotic use in childhood or recent years and unknown food sensitivities or allergy. Food sensitivities can come from trauma to the gut including infection, antibiotic and heart burn drug use. Your intestines have their own immune system that is tightly linked to the immune regulation of the entire body. When there is inflammation in the gut, there is inflammation in the body. Reducing your inflammation by treating your gut can improve your ability to lose weight as it decreases the stress on your body.

The Importance of Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities can be tested using blood work or using an elimination/provocation diet. The blood test detects immune reaction to a large variety of foods including gluten, dairy products, meat, fish, nuts and seeds. The elimination diet involves removing common offending foods from your diet for 6 weeks, followed by a strict re-introduction phase where experienced food reactions are documented if they occur.

Depending on which foods come up as inflammatory during testing or elimination diet, steps are taken to heal the gut and decrease this inflammatory reaction by reducing intake of the particular food for a period of time. For some people, they will avoid their food sensitivities for life, for others it will only be for a period of time while the immune regulation of the gut is improved and the foods can be included in the diet again.

Reducing the inflammatory stress in the body by eating the right foods and decreasing the foods that could be causing harm, the body will shed excess weight easier. When the gut is inflamed, nutrients and minerals vital for weight loss are not properly absorbed. These vitamins and minerals are needed for hormonal function including the master metabolic hormones from your thyroid.
